After 1st November, 2009, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided that no prepaid mobile connections should be issued and existing prepaid SIM cards should not be renewed in Jammu and Kashmir.
The move comes after reports that militants were getting mobile SIM cards on fake documents. Proper verification is not being done while providing prepaid mobile connections by the service providers or vendors. Fake documents or identity numbers are reportedly used by the vendors in case of prepaid connection.
This situation has given rise to serious concerns in the security and intelligence establishment of the insurgency hit state. The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Department of Telecommunication to take appropriate action.
