Sex.com has been put on sale and is scheduled to be auctioned off on 18th March. The bidding is expected to start at 1 million dollars. The auction will be held at New York law firm Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP.
Sex.com, which is considered as one of the most valuable domain names was originally purchased by entrepreneur Gary Kremen, chief executive of Grant Media and founder of dating website Match.com in 1994. He did nothing with it but, a year later Network Solutions was tricked into transferring ownership to Stephen M. Cohen. Ownership was restored to Gary Kremen, after a five year legal battle. Kremen, then sold the domain name at a reported price of 14 million dollars to Escom LLC backed by DOM Partners LLC.
At one point in time the website www.sex.com was making as much as 15,000 dollars per day according to a book the Sex.com Chronicles (2008).
The auction for www.pizza.com attracted bids above 2.5 million dollars in 2008.
