How to calculate ‘play value’ of a toy?

Based on various parameters, Cliff Arnall, a British psychologist has developed a new formula that could help in calculating the play value of a toy.

The formula is – P(i)+P(o)+Cr + S + U + H + (T*L) / (square root of C)=play value.

In the formula, parameter P(i) stands for playing alone; P(o) for playing with others; Cr for creativity of the toy; S for co-operative social interaction with others and U for utility of the toy; H denotes whether it can be handed down to other child; T for estimated time played in a week; L for the toy’s longevity and C for the cost of the toy.

A toy that scores 40 or more is considered to be of excellent value, as per the equation.

First edition of “On the Origin of Species” found on toilet bookshelf

Christie’s auction house on Sunday said it is selling a rare first edition of Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”.

The book one of around 1,250 copies first printed in 1859 had been on a toilet bookshelf at a family’s home in Oxford.

The book will be auctioned on Tuesday, the 150^th anniversary of the publication of the famous work. Christie’s said the book is likely to sell for 60,000 pounds approximately $99,000.

Do you know that in India there are more than 1,000 forms of saris?

A book on the Indian attire sari was released in Delhi, on Wednesday. The book was released in India by Wisdom Tree and the National Institute of Design (NID) at an event co-hosted by Craft House and Chivas.

Shedding light on the sari’s traditional significance and styles of weaving, design vocabulary and style of draping, the book titled ‘Indian Saris: Traditions-Perspectives-Design’ was written by Vijay Singh Katiyar. The volume boasts of over 892 visuals of a wide range of saris from the past to the contemporary.

The book is available in hardback edition for Rs 3,495 only.

UK Environment Film Fellowship

The UK Environment Film Fellowships have been awarded every year since 2005 to Indian environmental filmmakers.

Four fellowships will be awarded, through a countrywide bidding process, to a team of environmental filmmakers and climate change professionals or institutions; to make 12 minute documentaries on this year’s theme.

The fellowships are open to a join team comprising a filmmaker and climate change professional/ expert/ institution. The competition is open to Indian filmmakers only. Applicants should have a working experience in filmmaking. A filmmaker can submit more than one proposal based on any or both theme.

Last date for submission is 2^nd November.

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Programme (Natural Scientists and Mathematicians)

The Radcliffe Institute fellowship programme supports scientists, scholars, artists and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment, providing them with support to focus on their work for an academic year, unfettered by other obligations.

Candidates in any field with a PhD in the area of the proposed project by Dec 2008 are eligible. Stipends for one year with additional funds for project expenses are up to $65,000. The fellowship extends from early September 2010 to 30^th June 2011.

Applications are now available for the 2010–2011 fellowship year. Last date for applications in the natural sciences and mathematics is November 15, 2009.

Scholarship in Williams College, Massachusetts

Williams College is accepting applications for two post-doctoral fellowships in environmental studies, beginning in 1^st July, 2010.

Candidates with a PhD or who have completed their PhD within the last five years will be eligible.

Successful candidates will be appointed for a one or two year term and will carry a teaching load of one course each semester. The stipend is $38,940 per year plus an allowance of $4,500 for research and professional travel expenses.

Applications must be postmarked by 31^st Dec, 2009.

Scholarship in University of Cambridge, UK

University of Cambridge announced the Dr. Manmohan Singh scholarship 2010 offering 35,000 pounds scholarship per students at St. John’s College, UK.

Application from Indian students with a PhD degree will be eligible for scholarships for up to three years with three scholarships already planned for 2010-11.

Applications are open and the closing date for the scholarships is 15 Dec, 2009.

Scholarship in Macalester College, Minnesota

Macalester College is accepting applications for a two year Winston & amp; Maxine Wallin postdoctoral faculty fellowship from recent PhDs or those who have completed their PhD within the last 5 years focusing on the Islamic world. Candidates may also come from social science or humanitarian discipline.

The fellowship will begin in September 2010 and entails half time teaching. Candidates should be interested in teaching in a rigorous liberal arts environment. And also hold promise of substantial original scholarship.

The stipend includes a $57,000 salary plus benefits and funds to support research and travel. Applications must be postmarked by 15^th November, 2009.
